Summary: Rikki struggled with making her way in a world not her own. But Kate showed her that just because this wasn't her world didn't mean she couldn't find a home here.

Rikki cursed as she slowly made her way out of the alley. Stupid, she thought. Stupid and careless. She shouldn't have let that mugger get the drop on her. She had been shot before, but this bullet had lodged itself deep in her leg, and it hurt like hell. She just hoped that the baton she landed upside the guy's head would keep him down.
"Hey! Girlie! Where do you think you're going?"

Rikki turned around to see the thug glaring at her, wearing a knife. Okay. He didn't have a gun, so she could probably still take him out with a bad leg. She just needed to hope she didn't get lightheaded from the blood loss before she took him out. Grabbing onto the baton in her pocket, she got into a fighting stance...

And looked up in shock as an arrow knocked the knife out of the thug's hand. Before she could see where the arrow came from, another one pinned the guy against the wall.

"You looked like you could use a little help." Rikki looked up to see Hawkeye perched on top of the roof, pointing her bow down at the pinned mugger. "Next shot goes in your shoulder. Quit while you're ahead."

"Thanks." Rikki flashed Hawkeye a wry smile as the other girl jumped down from the rooftop. "I almost had him."

Kate's eyes turned to the trail of blood Rikki was leaving behind her. "Oh, man. That looks pretty bad. Want me to - "

"No!" Rikki raised her hand, a bit too quickly, and Kate gave her a suspicious look. "I'll be fine. I just need to..."

Rikki suddenly felt herself get lightheaded. She grasped for the wall to steady herself, but missed, falling towards a garbage can. She felt a hand grab her arm before she crashed, and that was the last thing she felt as she drifted into unconsciousness.

-------

The penthouse was gorgeous and clearly belonged to someone much richer than herself, Rikki thought as she woke up in the almost impossibly soft bed. Her leg was aching, but it didn't hurt nearly as much as it had before she passed out, and a quick inspection revealed that someone had removed the bullet and bandaged her up.

"Be careful. I sewed you up, but the bullet went pretty deep. I don't know how much damage it did."

Kate stepped out of the doorway, toweling off her hair. Rikki had met Kate more than once, in the field, but this was the first time she had seen her out of costume. Maybe she was a little lightheaded from the blood loss, or maybe it was gratitude for patching her up, but Rikki's first thought was that Kate was gorgeous.

"Whoa. You're looking a little glassy-eyed there, Nomad. You okay?"

"Yeah!" Rikki snapped out of her daze. "I'm fine. Just a little out of it."

"Not surprised. You had a pretty rough night. Do you need something to eat? Drink? The refrigerator's pretty stocked."

"I think I'm good, thanks. I'd better just get out of here before anyone notices me. I don't want to blow your secret ID." Rikki got out of bed - and promptly fell back on it when a sharp pain shot up her leg. "Or not."

"Hey, don't worry about that." Kate helped Rikki get back into bed and elevate her leg. "My dad's on a business trip with my stepmom, and the help knows not to come into my room unless I ask them to. You're safe her. So just relax, okay? There's no reason for you to be running out of here while you're hurt."

"Okay, okay." Rikki sighed. "I don't know why you're so intent on looking out for me, though. We barely know each other."

"Yeah, but I've been there." Kate shrugged. "Last year, I was the new girl on the scene. It was pretty rough, and there were a lot of close calls. Having someone looking out for me once in a while...it would have made things a lot easier."

"You had the Young Avengers, though, right?"

"When we were working together, sure. But we all had our own lives, and it was a while before we became really close. Besides, I kind of self-appointed myself to the team, and it took a while before the boys' club really accepted me. Mainly because I was really persistent."

"Here's to girls not taking no for an answer." Rikki grinned as she raised her hand. Kate high-fived it. "I've had a few assists from the hero community along the way, but I'm pretty much on my own here. I guess that's what happens when you're a refugee from another world..."

Rikki's voice trailed off, and Kate caught a glint of sadness in her eyes. "You never really talked about the world you came from. Was it a lot like this one?"

"Kind of. It was pretty messed up in some ways...but there were also a lot of great heroes. It wasn't perfect, but it was mine. When I sacrificed myself to help my Cap...my world...I was at peace with that being the end." Rikki shook her head. "It's one of those crazy things that comes with being a hero, I guess - you never think about what your next act is going to be after you die."

"Well, for what it's worth from me...I think dying to save the world is a pretty awesome story to be able to tell people." Kate rolled up her sleeve, revealing a visible web of scars on her arm. "Memento from the Skrull invasion. We've all got a few."

Rikki traced her finger over the scars. "Wow. It kind of makes me feel better, actually - back on my world, I was pretty much the only crimefighter my age. I worked under Captain America, but when it came to people to hang out with, there weren't many who knew what it was like to be in "the life", you know?"

"Well, that's the important thing to remember about this world...you might be from a different world, but you're never alone."

Kate leaned over on the bed, and she and Rikki locked eyes. After a second that felt like an hour, Rikki slowly leaned in and tentatively kissed Kate on the lips. Without hesitation, Kate returned the kiss with ten times the passion.

"Wow."

Kate laughed as she lay down on the bed next to Rikki, careful not to jostle the redhead's leg. "Wow yourself. You're a pretty good kisser."

Rikki felt herself blushing as she ran a hand through her hair. "I haven't had much practice..."

"Trust me, it's not the kind of thing you practice. It's just something you're a natural at." Kate grinned as she slipped her hand into Rikki's. "And fighting is definitely not your only skill."

Rikki smiled as they locked lips again. This world, new and frightening as it was at times, was finally starting to feel like home.
